My Shepherd

Overview: David’s 23rd Psalm is familiar to most people because it is so often quoted and read at funerals. Because of this, the chapter sometimes seems to take on a “sad” tone and it seems so final. However, at a closer look, one will certainly determine that this is a Psalm of power, life, and promise! David’s intent in this chapter is to express his trust and peaceful confidence in God. This is not a “woe is me” message. This is a declaration of the goodness and the faithfulness of God and how He empowers, protects, and provides for His children. There is no way you will feel defeated or weary as you read through each verse. This chapter lets you know that even in the face of death, Jesus will walk you through it all! Verse 5 of the chapter says that He even prepares a glorious table just for His children in the very face of the enemy.

Memory verse: Psalm 23:6 – Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.

He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.

Confession: I will not ever want for anything because I have everything I need through Him.  I will not fear because He is with me in every situation.  The devil will not win in my life because Jesus made a public spectacle of him and took away his power through the work of the Cross (Colossians 2:15).
